Identify the department

Write a formal application addressed to the Public Information Officer (PIO) under Section 6(1) of the RTI Act, 2005.

Who can file an RTI?

Any Indian citizen can file an RTI application. You do not need to give a reason for requesting information, and no one can ask you why you need it.

How long does the government have to respond?

The Public Information Officer must respond within 30 days of receiving your application. In matters involving life and liberty, the response must come within 48 hours.

What happens if I don't get a response?

If you don't receive a response within 30 days, or receive an unsatisfactory response, you can file a First Appeal with the First Appellate Authority within 30 days of the deadline.

How much does it cost to file an RTI?
